Organic, natural, bio?

As healthy lifestyles become more popular, the demand for cosmetics made with natural ingredients grow. The time has passed, and synthetic unnatural ingredients containing chemically formulated, cosmetics have gone out of fashion, but luckily there are trustworthy alternatives to cheap mass products. However, do we know how to select the possibly most natural cosmetics from the endless supply? During the pandemic, customers became more conscious, more informed, that is why- it is very wise- that they don’t want to burden their skin’s metabolism with chemical substances, and alongside they would like to protect their immune system’s performance capabilities as well.

Be informed!!

Cosmeticians must adapt to this professional challenge, and be informed, prepared on this area, in other words they must be able to choose the most natural items from the abundant selection of „natural cosmetics”. This is not only in the interest of cosmetician, but also for customers.

There is an enormous confusion noticeable by cosmeticians (and of course by the population) regarding this concept regardless of the huge amount of information available. Many people believe the product is 100% natural simply based on the symbols the label displays, without asking themselves, what is it a 100% of – whether it is natural or organic? There are several brands that advertise themselves, as „natural” however, these are often just to grab customers attention, in most cases there aren’t any independent certifications bodies backing it up, its only „self certified”. It is essential to thoroughly review all cosmetics’ INCI ingredients!

The circle of advertised natural cosmetics can be divided into professional, toxicological and dermatological experiences into the following categories:

1. Natural ingredients found in a synthetic medium- including cosmetics made with natural ingredients (ex: herbal extracts, fruit extracts, fruit juices) from the list of ingredients on the (INCI) list, it can be noticed that it is chemically formulated, has synthetic structure and additives, herbal ingredients were worked into synthetic preservatives. The cosmetic containing a couple of herbal ingredients are „stared” and highlighted and focused on in the product’s commercial. In reality in these categories there are only 1-2 pcs of natural ingredients, however generally we only pay for a minimal concentration of it the rest is synthetic, beside unnatural added chemical substances.

2.   Natural cosmetics based on toxicological, dermatological and cosmetician experiences- Certain preservatives, mineral oils, GMO originating ingredients, synthetic sunscreen etc. that aren’t recommended to be used, and it is expected to contain all herbal originating ingredients. The manufacturers of these types of products can define, what the product is „free” from.

3.   There are natural cosmetics- that don’t have to certify the products formulated with a natural approach, but there are independent certifying bodies, that verifies and certifies certain brands according (to a list of criteria’s which includes forbidden substances): these are called certified natural cosmetics.

4.     Organic cosmetics- must be certified! The certifying organization must annually verify the product based on its own criteria system. They not only examine if the product is organic (if the ingredients are originating from ecological agricultural producers), but also the recipe, manufacturing technique, storage, label, etc. as well, and only after this, can it receive an organic or x% organic certificate. The Hungarian BIOKONTROLL (HU-ÖKO-01) is considered quite strict in this area. Organic products must have 95% certified organic ingredients from 90% agricultural production (not including mineral material and water parts) to receive an organic certificate. The remaining parts made up of structural matter, vitamins, permitted preservatives- and antioxidants complete the formula. Over two hundred of BIOLA’s self developed          products have internationally acknowledged, official organic cosmetics certificate.

5.    Biodynamic organic cosmetics- According to Biodynamic Federation Demeter International e.V.’s conditions a product that has an existing organic certificate can be taken for further certification. Demeter’s certificate is a type of official upgrading from a normal organic certificate. A product can only have a Demeter logo on packaging if a minimum of 66% of herbal ingredients originates from so called biodynamic producers.
